At St Enoch shopping centre in Glasgow, the customers were treated to an experience of extravagance in the shape of WBO World Champion Ricky Burns doing a public workout in a full size boxing ring.
There’s a lot of talk of unifications and all sorts of ramifications but Ricky Burns is not looking any further than next Saturday. He is well aware his Puerto Rican opponent Jose A Gonzales has knocked out 17 opponents in 22 fights. Ricky doesn’t know much about his opponents style but said he has been sparring with a variety of boxers with different styles, his training camp regime has stayed the same, “Why try and fix something that’s not broken” he smiled. His tactics are to try to work his opponent out in the first couple of rounds then go to work.
I watched Ricky warm up and put in a furious, powerfully robust 10 rounds of pad work with trainer Billy Nelson. Ricky seemed to get stronger every round that by the later rounds you could hardly see the combinations he was putting together, his fists were a furious medley of solid, tumultuous precision blows.
Ricky clearly pointed out that its one fight at a time and does not care to look past 11th May 2013 at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.
I believe Ricky Burns looks he's in the prime of his life and there’s nothing going to stand in his way.
